We, in Austria, feel Sustainability has been introduced to the travel and tourism conversation with good reason. It is transforming our consciousness as we plan for the future – for tourism and society at large. Tourism is positioned as an industry that can lead the world to “Think more and Give more.” This first atb_experience, in June 2013 represented a milestone in this journey.
Sustainability touches the heart of why people travel – to be engaged, to explore, discover how others really live and to reach inside ourselves as travelers seeking life-affirming experiences. At the same time, the necessary elements of a strong tourism infrastructure – transportation, hotels and attractions, must also be carefully maintained in order to deliver value and join this integrated approach to tourism. At the core of Sustainability are the natural settings that require serious stewardship to breathe life into our worlds existing as more than just pretty postcards that attract millions of visitors to Austria every year.
Conservation and Sustainability are not new concerns to Austria as it ranks sixth in the world for environmental sustainability according to the World Economic Forum’s Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index 2013. One-fifth of Austria’s farmland is tended organically; while nearly 10% of its vineyards produce organic wines and products.
Hopefully, the new atb_experience event format dedicated to “tourism in transition. Sustainable contributions of Austria’s tourism industry in times of change and upheaval.” inspired others to develop travel products – both domestically and internationally that will create a broad menu for tomorrow’s business.
Thanks for the experience with us!
Yours, Petra Stolba, Managing Director, ANTO
