The Lechweg River Trail

From the mountain to the valley, from the source to the waterfalls – this award-winning, long-distance trail follows the foaming Lech River, one of the last natural river systems remaining in the European Alps. The superb 125-kilometer Lechweg Trail is trail is divided in 15 sections and takes seven days to complete—and each day provides a new adventure. From the river source in Formarinsee, a lake located at an elevation of 1,793 meters, the trail follows the river to the Lech Falls in the German town of Füssen, 800 meters above sea level, crossing two countries and five regions. A number of places along the trail are so special that you will have the images etched into your memory for years to come. There are widely recognised natural attractions, varied wildlife and plant life, cultural treasures and authentic Lechweg Trail products to savour. Hikers are spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation along the route, which was awarded the “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” certification, with a wide network of walker-friendly places to stay. Special baggage transfer services along the Lechweg Trail ensure a comfortable walk, unencumbered by heavy baggage.

10:20                     Arrival in Warth am Arlberg

After a short drive you will be welcomed to Warth am Arlberg.

10:45                     Walk from Warth am Arlberg to Gehren

Accompanied by your local guide, you will walk along the Lechweg Trail from Warth to Gehren (about 3 kilometers), where you enter the Austrian Province of Tirol. In the village of Gehren, you will be greeted by Lechweg Trail Chairman Ronald Petrini and by Lisbeth Fritz from Gehrnerhof Farm. Lisbeth is a passionate farmer’s wife and cook, friendly landlady and host and successful producer of the ‘Lechweg Chrommi Chämmiwurza’, a local sausage specialty.

Having enjoyed a lunch of local delicacies at Gehrnerhof Farm, a bus takes you to Steeg in Lechtal Valley.

13:45                       Bus Ride from Gehren to Steeg 

From Steeg you will walk to Holzgau beside the Lech River in the company of singer and songwriter Toni Knittl. This 5-kilometer walk takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete.

16:00                       Arrival in Holzgau

The picturesque village of Holzgau is famous for the distinctive art of late Baroque wall painting that adorns many of its homes. A shuttle bus service will bring you to the spectacular, 200-meter long Holzgau suspension bridge that crosses Höhenbach Canyon at an incredible 110 meters above ground.

13:30                     Nature Walk around Riedener See Lake with Stoll Walter

Visit one of the most striking lakes in the Tirol Lech Nature Park’s wilderness: Mostly forested, Riedener See Lake is an aquatic jewel framed by old-growth evergreens.

14:30                      Ride a TiRollerin Hybrid Roller across Klausenwald Forest to Ehrenberg Castle Ensemble

Visit to the Record Breaking Suspension Footbridge “highline179” and to the Nature Exhibition titled “Der letzte Wilde”  (‘The Last Untamed’)
(Registration for the TiRollerin Ride is required in advance; there will be an alternative for those not wanting to ride the hybrid roller.)
